NSF Student Travel Grants

The National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States of America offers several travel grants to undergraduate and graduate students, who are either enrolled in a US institute of higher learning or who are US citizens, to attend EUSIPCO 2019.

Grant

The grant amount per awardee will be the requested amount or lower, depending on the number of applicants, as we will try to sponsor as many students as possible. The maximum support per student will be $1,000. As such, with NSF requested funding amount of $10,000, we will be able to support a minimum of 10 students. The stipends will be granted on reimbursement basis.

EUSIPCO 2019 organizing committee compromises to reach out under-represented groups and minorities (women, students of color, etc.) in the travel grant application process, encouraging and promoting their participation in the conference.

Eligibility

Active PhD students are eligible to apply for this grant. Ph.D students who have already graduated at the time of submission are no longer eligible. They must be enrolled in a US institute of higher learning or must be a US citizen enrolled in an institute of higher learning anywhere in the world. PhD students can only apply for only one of the two travel grants, NSF or EUSIPCO. In case of double application, students eligible for the NSF grant will be dropped from the EUSIPCO list of applications.

Application

Applicants have to fill in and send the form to eusipco2019@oceano-azul.es.

The application must include the following materials:

  • A reference letter from an advisor or an instructor at your institute. The letter should be:
    • supporting your application
    • confirming your enrollment status as a student
    • detailing the need for the support
    • possibly committing to covering any costs above the awarded amount
  • An estimate of the costs: registration, transportation, meals, lodging, and others.
  • A one-paragraph motivation for applying to the grant.
  • Clarification as to who will cover expenses in case they exceed the awarded amount.
  • Where applicable, EUSIPCO 2019 paper number(s) that you coauthored.

Selection process

The selection of the awardees of the travel grants will be performed by a committee composed of the General Co-Chairs (Mónica F. Bugallo and Luis Castedo), Technical Co-Chairs (Maria Sabrina Greco and Marius Pesavento) and Students Activities Co-Chairs (Pau Closas and Jordi Vilà-Valls). The committee will be in charge of implementing the selection process and ensuring a transparent application of the criteria. The students awarded with the travel grants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • The average total grade given to the papers that have a student (US-based) as first author will be used as selection factor.
  • Priority will be given to students from under-represented groups.
  • Students awarded with the travel grant must present the paper at the conference.
  • Travel support to students that are not presenting a paper will be considered if there is available funding after supporting those with articles. In those cases, priority will be given to students from under-represented groups and to those at their earlier stages of their research career.
